Program: Service Above Self Award honoring Kristin Thurman-Fein. Kris was surprised and greeted with a chorus of "For She's A Fabulous Woman." Several speakers saluted Kris, starting with Michael Torr, Rotary's Vocational Service Chair. Michael thanked her for creating a "village" atmosphere by her dedication to the community. Michael then presented her a plaque from the Rotary Club to a standing ovation. Kris gave thanks and was shocked to be awarded for something she feels she just has a duty to the community for, "You just give back!" She encouraged us to pass on the privilege of volunteering to the next generations.
The microphone was then sent around the room for those that wanted to contribute thanks to Kris. Jim Maresca spoke of their time serving on boards together and Kris's kindness. Jim Corbett spoke of the time they spent together in the 60s in SF and later bringing music to Monte Rio School. Jennifer Schwinn (Monte Rio School Superintendant) spoke of her lifetime of Service Above Self and her decades of leadership and devotion to the school and the community. Kris's younger sister said that Kris was a great barometer of what is right and wrong in the world, but she's no saint! Emily Heinzelman from the Russian River Senior Center said that you don't just get Kris as a volunteer, you get her whole family. Kris was given a mug that said, "Stop me before I volunteer again!" Debra Newbie said that you can judge a person's character by what they do in their spare time. In Kris's case, a mentor, example, and friend. Michele McDonell thanked Kris for her service to the community, particularly the help she provided to the Monte Rio Variety Show and to Monte Rio School. She said Kris leads by example and is fun to work with. Katrina Thurman said Kris embodies "relentless love, unconditional care, and forgiveness." She gave Kris a gift of a figure of the goddess Quan Yin(?), the one who can hear the cries and remain open. Husband Dan and daughter Sochi also gave their love to Kris.
Ross concluded with a poem and became a bit choked up at the end!
