Acting President Jeff called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m.
The Pledge was led by Brendan Coen.
Jeff gave an invocation
Hans led us in a verse of "Imagine" by John Lennon
Chuck led us in the Four Way Test
Visiting Rotarians: None.
Guests of Rotarians: Mary Agneberg and Ken Malik (speaker).
Correspondence: None.
Announcements: Mary Agneberg was thanked for raising over $2,000 during the Plaza Concerts with her "bucket" over the past two years.
Jeff has returned from the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in San Jose. It's a great 3 day motivational experience. He heard the next Rotary International President, Ravi Ravindran, speak to the upcoming presidents.
Hans told us about the visit to the new Rotary Room at the Center For Student Leadership at the SRJC. 68 clubs use the room for their meetings. We donated $2,000 over a two year period toward the creation of the room. They are also setting up a $100,000 endowment to provide for upkeep of the room.
Happy Bucks: Jeff gave $10 for being glad to be in Rotary! Donna gave a happy buck to announce she is acting as the Interim Executive Director for West County Community Services/Community and Family Service Agency.
Fines: Chuck was fined $2 for being late and got another $3 added on for an excessively long attempt to talk his way out of it.
Raffle: None this week.
Program:Ken Malik spoke to us from the Prostate Awareness Foundation. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer 20 years ago at the age of 50 and is now on the cusp of turning 70. PAF is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Their website is ProstateAwarenessFoundation.org. They have support meetings at the Marshall House (behind the Senior Center) on the 2nd Thursday of every month. They also have a mentor program for people who have been through or are dealing with prostate cancer. Ken also maintains the Sustainable Prostate Blog.
Common prostate problems: enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, prostatitis (inflammation).
250,000 men are diagnosed each year. Approximately 25K die each year. However, death rates have dropped 25% in the last 10 years. 1 in 4 men are overtreated due to the unpredictable nature of cancer growth rates. PSA Testing: Pro - early detection, Con - over treatment leading to side effects.
Preventative measures include keeping weight down, a low cholesterol diet, and exercise. Keep a positive attitude!
Thought for the Day: Jeff liked Ken's suggestion of staying positive, so we ended on that note.
