President Ross called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m.
The Pledge was led by Mike Torr.
Mike Torr also gave an invocation.
Lori led us in a singing of "It's A Grand Old Flag."
Hans filled in for Chuck with a bad redneck joke.
Visiting Rotarians: Julie Kidd - Sebastopol Sunrise
Guests of Rotarians: Erin and Caitlin Rickard, Kathy Smith
Correspondence: Food For Humans invited us as one of their sponsors to their breakfast in Forestville on 10/18.
Arnold Kunst (Leadership of Lincoln) wrote to thank us for our hospitality when he spoke two weeks ago.
River to Coast Children's Services will be having a reception at their offices (1st Street and Church Streets, Guerneville) on 10/9 at 5:30 to introduce the new executive director Soledad Cardona. As major donors, we are invited.
Ed read a letter from the Cal Fire Chief, Mike Torres updating the wildfire situation in Weed and the King Fire and the hardships on firefighters.
Announcements: The club will buy "Rotarian at work" T-shirts for any members that need them.
Ross spoke about membership and had us swear an oath to each try to bring in one new member this year.
The cemetery cleanup was a success. The tour itself will be on October 11th at the Redwood Memorial Gardens in Guerneville (corner of Woodland and Sunset avenues). The first tour will be at 1:00 p.m. and another at 2:30 p.m.
Several Rotarians turned out to the Hideaway on Sunday for "Super Special Sunday". It sounds like a good time was had by all.
Happy Bucks:
Fines: Chuck was fined $2 for a Four Way Test Violation (Is It The Truth?) Herman J. was fined $2 for talking out of turn. Mike Nicholls was fined $2 for being out of uniform! Ed Smith volunteered a buck for his second "So on and so forth" of the night. Only $5 ended up in the collection tray. Hmm...
Raffle: Knud had the winning ticket, but drew the 7 of spades.
Program: Marrianne McBride from the Council on Aging was our guest. They offer social, legal, financial and nutritional services for seniors. They also have an Elder Advocate at the Family Justice Center. Their newest office is in Sebastopol. The collaborate with Community & Family Service Agency (Formerly WCCS) to provide programs as well.
Legal services: Estate planning, powers of attorney, etc. Housing and financial security advocacy. Assist in debt reduction, tenant/landlord disputes. They can establish trusts for $1,200 for individuals, $1,800 for couples.
Financial services: Money management services. Collaborates with adult protective services. Help seniors apply for benefits they may not know they qualify for. Can act as an estate trustee when needed.
Nutritional services: Meals on Wheels. Low sodium, low fat, maybe low flavor (by design), but made from scratch from fresh ingredients. Also allows seniors to have daily human contact to check on their well-being. Currently delivering 1,200 meals/day. Also dining sites in Sebastopol, RR Senior Center, Forestville, and Occidental. Coming soon will be gourmet "grab and go" meals at local markets as another source of income to support the program.
Senior X-games: Inspired by the Huntsman Games in St. George, Utah. Seniors compete in basketball, track & field, Bocci ball, and 14 others. Known as the Wine Country Games.
Heath action: It is a Sonoma County goal to be the healthiest county in the state by 2020. Marin currently holds the title.
Greatest determinates of health: healthcare quality (10%), genetics (20%), lifestyle (70%).
Thought for the Day: Andy had a thought along the lines of: The more you talk, the more you think, the farther you get from your goals. So just concentrate on your goals.
