Avandia is a popular medication that has been prescribed to millions of diabetes patients in the United States. Disturbingly, recent media and government reports show that this drug significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. According to a New York Times article published on February 19, 2010, more than 300 people died in the third quarter of 2009 after taking Avandia. Even more individuals suffered heart failure, stroke, liver failure, vision problems and other dangerous side effects.

Potential Avandia Recall
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently conducting an investigation to determine whether to remove Avandia from the market. The FDA is expected to announce its decision on an Avandia recall at a joint public meeting of the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs and Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committees in July 2010. Meanwhile, the FDA urges Avandia patients to consult their physicians regarding continued use of this drug. However, patients should not discontinue taking Avandia without talking to their doctors first.
Avandia Warnings: History
Sadly, this is not the first time Avandia has come under close scrutiny by the FDA. In May 2007, a study by Cleveland Clinic cardiologist Dr. Steve Nissen revealed that Avandia increases the risk of heart attack by 43 percent. In response to this report, the FDA released an Avandia warning and required Avandia’s manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, to take several safety measures. Some of the precautions included changing the side effect warning box, updating the patients’ medication guide, and requiring GlaxoSmithKline to undertake additional safety studies.
However, the FDA decided not to pull Avandia from the market in 2007. As a result, physicians continued to prescribe this medication, thus increasing the number of Avandia heart attack and Avandia stroke victims. In February 2010, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee completed an investigation into Avandia and released a 334-page report. The committee concluded that GlaxoSmithKline was aware of the risks posed by Avandia for years but attempted to keep the information from the public.
