From
the looks of it, our homeowners have dressed their Fence posts with 1x wrap.
This can often result in cupping or bowing, as well as the checks
that may develop as the wrap attempts to shrink and expand but is resisted
by the fact that it is fixed to the actual post. The
only proper methods for wrapping a post is found in our column design,
with it's allowances for expansion and contraction.
And yet . . . if you are going to wrap your posts with 1x lumber of a higher grade than the post itself, the below methodology is the safest bet. Wrap each face to the corner edge of the post instead of overlapping the 1x of the adjoining face. This prevents the unsightly gaps from ocurring when the four faces are overlapped into a tight joint on completion bun which lasts only until the first climate change.
