With grades that slope as gradually as shown, CPW's Wood Fence Panels maintain a square and plumb alignment. Often the grade itself can be feathered to fill in the gaps at the lower ends. When the grades slopes more dramatically, the bottom horizontal rail can be parallel to the slope, with the rest of the panel square and plumb. When the grades slopes even more, such as down an embankment, the entire Wood Fence Panel is 'Racked', where we see all the horizontal rails parallel with the sloping grade. This is shown below in Style 2-1

Long Country Wood Fence. Height:

48-inches This Garden Fence Design is essentially identical to style #1. We employ a number of varying modifications and transitions to the grade throughout the property. When a Fence is designed to flank a walkway, as here, it is always best to maintain a fence height between 36" - 42". Featuring the Cantilevered Corner in foreground.

Illustrating how the Wood Fence Panel is sloped to the grade, with transitions to level grades. (This and the next frame were photographed 3 years after installation.) Garden Fencing on a Slope:

Discovering the exact angle of a sloping grade, to the degree, requires returning to old trigonometry textbooks...calculating co-sines. You will need to provide:
1) The level run measurement (so, a level line the distance of the entire slope. This line begins at the high end on the grade.)
2) The rise. (so, a straight-edge at the bottom from the grade to where it intersects with the level line above. This distance from the grade to the level line.
3) We will take care of the trigonometry.

Stepped Fence Panels

Fence #2-2 drawn to a subtle slope in the grade. Each panel dropping incrementally. This is easily accomplished by setting a stringline to the desired height on the high end and again to the same height from the grade on the low post, and where the string intersects each post is where the top corner of that particular panel is set. This way you insured of stepping at exactly the same increments evenly across your layout.

In the beginning, Charles installed himself. If you are developing a new product, whether in the shop or the field, there is no substitute for hands-on insight. Those who delegate, who remove themselves from the many nuances that contribute to the eventual success of a blank canvass, also remove themselves from the very insight required.
