OPTION #1
12' or less Overall Width

drive gates

Our most popular Driveway Gate Assembly, Option #1 is defined by 2-1/4" thick gate and an overall rough opening width between posts or columns that is 12' or less. These gates mount in the same simple procedure as the pedestrian gates, to either 6x6 wood posts, or when mounting to stucco or masonry columns, the gates are accompanied with a pair of jambs, reducing the overall opening by 3".

* Prowell Woodworks does not supply automation. For automated gates, we suggest the armature style motors that mount on one end directly to the posts/columns, and the other end to the bottom horizontal rails of the gates. It mounts as the final step innstallation of the gates. Consult with your automation contractor for their preferred manufacturer and visit our Product Specification for further information.

* The maximum width span of any single gate leaf is 6'.
* Gate stiles and rails are 2-1/4" thickness.
* Prowell Woodworks supplies your Wood Gate only. Built to your specified site dimensions.
* Spring-Point: Referring to gates with arched top rails. The upper right and left shoulders of the gate where the arch begin.s
* Option #1 Driveway Gates weigh approximately 150 lbs per leaf.
* Clear, dry, vertical-grain western cedar.
* Mounting Options:
--------- A) From surfaced 6x6 wood posts
--------- B) From new or existing masonry columns (requiring wood jambs)
--------- C) From Steel posts
* Option #1 Driveway Gates include bronze 4" ball-bearing butt hinges. To be surface-mounted on gate and posts.
* There has never been a known application of a Prowell Driveway Gate that sagged.
* More information can be found by within the Product Specifications.

OPTION #2
12-16' Overall Width

(Exposed Steel Frame)

drive gates

Option #2 is defined by 2-1/4" thick wood gates that are surface-mounted to an exposed steel frame fabricated by the site contractor. The steel frame is fabricated as per the dimensions called out in the Prowell Drawings ( Insuring the steel frame aligns to the wood stiles and rails). The preference for hinge systems belongs to the site contractor, relaying this information to Prowell and specifying required hinge clearance.

* Prowell Woodworks does not supply automation. Recommended motor models can be considered within the Product Specifications.
* When mounted to their steel frames, Option #2 Gates can weight up to 250 lbs per leaf.
* Mounting Options:
----------------A) 6x6 steel posts set 48" below grade
--------------- B) New masonry/stone columns with a steel post core and fitted with steel T-Bar extensions
--------------- C) Existing masonry/stone columns if they are deemed strucurally sound by your contractor. Requires embedding steel threaded rod.
--------------- D) To Prowell Lighted or Unlighted Gate Columns that wrap the steel posts of option 'A' above.

Option #3 is defined by an unseen 2" steel frame embedded within the construction of the wood gates.

* Gate thickness is 3"
* Requires steel posts or masonry columns with steel core
* Exposed steel plates provided at locations specified by the site contractor for his hinge system welding.
* Option #3 gates can weight approximately 300 lbs per leaf.
* IOption #3 gates require double the joineryand the mortising of inner troughs to embed the steel frame.

OPTION #4
Sliding Driveway Gates

(Exposed Steel Frame)

drive gates

Option #4 Driveway Gates are defined by a pair of wood gate leafs that mount to a single span steel frame that slides on a track left-to-right. The steel frame is fabnricated to the dimensional specifications called out on Prowell's provided drawings to insure the frame and the gate are aligned properly. The posting can be 6x6 wood posts or masonry columns, as neither actually bear the load of the gate itself and simply act as alignment guides for the sliding rollers

* 2-1/4" thickness
* Prowell provides the Wood Driveway Gates only.
* Single sopan wiood gates are not available. All Sliding gate openings are fitted with two gate leafs.
* On site tracks and motors are provided by site contractors.
* Various Sliding Driveway Gate applications can be considered further within the Product Specifications.
* Prowell's Driveway Gates normally extend approximately 2-3" beyond the posts or columns to accomodate rollers and tracks.
* Sliding gates roll behind the entry posts or columns.

OPTION #5
Mounting to Prowell Columns

drive gates

Option #5 is defined by those Driveway Gates that are optiong for Prowell's lighted or un lighted Gate Columns. The purpose in developing these columns is to provide a more pleasing alternative to mounting the driveway gates to exposed steel posts, or even wood posts. They also provide an opportunity to corroborate the design and style of the driveway gates with the columns as a complimenting assembly.

* CPW Columns can be viewed on Gallery 5
* The pattern of the upper grid section of the columns can be modified to compliment the pattern of the Driveway Gate.
* Gate
* Columns are two-sided grids and pickets, with the other two sides as solid. They arrive with one removable side to allow the Column to slip around the site posts, furred for a snug fit to any post dimension.
* When using 6x6 steel posts to hinge your gates, the Gate Columns are mortised to accept the welded arm drawn off the steel post, and slip over the post as 3-sided assemblies, with the fourth side applied on site
* When using 6x6 wood posts, the same procedure as above is followed, with the exception that the hinges are standard 4" ball-bearing butt hinges and hinge directly to the Gate Column.
* With the Gate Columns, approximately 3-1/2" is lost from the overall opening width between the steel posts.

  Sloping Grades

UP/BACK: If you approach the property and the driveway is sloping uphill, we of course need to know the exact rise and fall for the overall span. This is important simply because if the gates are to open in toward the property, they need to clear the rising grade at 90-degrees.

If you as a homeowner are doing this, then take a straight-edge such as a 2x4 that is half the width between columns or posts and with one end at the column where the gate hinges. Set a level on top and either raise or lower the straight-edge until the level reads level. Either make a mark, and then measure from the low point on the grade to your mark, or measure while holding the straight-edge. This will give you the drop for that particular gate leaf.

LEFT / RIGHT: If the slope of your driveway is left to right as you approach from the street, then we also need to know that exact rise or fall. This is important because you may be left with an undue clearance at the bottom of one gate and not so with the other.

To gather this measurement,and in lieu of a transit, you can opt for a string-line and a $4 line level. Hold one end of the string on the high end of the driveway surface at the base of the column. Walk the other end of the string-line to the other column and clip on the line level and raise the line until the bubble is between the lines. Measure that distance from the line to the ground.

* Left to Right slopes are dealt with on a sliding scale.
--A) If the drop from one column to the other is 5" or less, it is often dealt with by increasing the width of the bottom horizontal rails in a continuous angle parallel with the slope. In this, the top edge of the bottom rails are level, but the bottom is cut to an angle.
--B) If the slope is more dramatic, the entire bottom rail runs parallel to the sloping grade. In this we have the gate getting taller and taller as the grade drops. This difference happens only in the length of the lower panels or pickets, with the top of the gate remaining level.
--C) If we are even more dramatic, then we create what is called a Racked Gate. In this, we have the entire gate assembly racked, as if it were a parallelogram. The pickets or planks remain vertically plumb, whereas all horizontal rails are parallel to the slope.
  Option A above runs approximately 4% above the gate cost
Option B above runs approximately 7% above the gate cost
Option C above runs approximately 10% above the gate cost.
(The exact percentage depends on the gate design and the overall width of the opening)
    Links to a few examples of driveway gates with sloping grades
    1) Driveway Gate #3, with a left-to-right slope that was 4". To little to enact any of the above options
    2) Driveway Gate #6-1, with left-to-right slope once again about 4"
    3) Driveway Gate #9. Approximately 8" slope that utilized Option B, with the bottom rail following the slope, and the gate growing increasingly taller.
    4) Driveway Gate #12, with a dramatic slope within only a 12' overall opening. Here we opted for a black rubber sweep, mortised into the bottom of the gate as a removable feature.
    5) Driveway Gate #14, where we once again utilize a rubber sweep, with only a 5" slope.

  A few Miscellaneous Notes
    Unless otherwise stipulated, all Driveway Gates are shipped unfinished. If you prefer, we will pre-finish your gates using only the environmentally friendly WoodRX. See Recommended Finishes
  Access Communications:

--The most basic format is the simple remote, activating the gates upon approach from your vehicle through a hand-held remote or configured to your cell phone.
--If the Drive Gates are not visible from the house, it is often best to opt for a keypad and intercom that allows communication between the Driveway Gate and residence (The keypad is for homeowners to key in their code--as well as overriding keys by Fire Dept, with the intercom relegated for visitors wishing to gain access.). Access is activated from within the house. Automation can be deactivated to either maintaining the Drive Gates in an open position or in the event of a forecasted power failure due to storms, etc.
--Virtually all automated motor manufacturers can be configured to activate through a cell phone.
