An album of jazz readings of traditional Jewish songs, done by saxophonist Shapiro. Mostly upbeat and fun. Nice band on here, too: Steve Berenstein (of Sex Mob and Lounge Lizards) on trumpet, and Peter Apfelbaum, one of my favorite ex-Bay-Area players, on sax.

Liberty is a former Bay Area guitarist now residing in New York, and this is his first album in quite a while. Quartet music, nicely accessible but with a bit of an edge; another great release from the Pi label.

An album of melodic improvisations on "Lutheal" piano, which is an ordinary grand piano outfitted with an apparatus to change the strings' sound, making it tinny and ringy, or muted like a marimba. Weston tries out all sorts of sounds on this album while working through a system of 52 (nonunique) musical scales. Nice stuff.

Taarka -- "Kudzu" -- Even Odd Bird (self-released, 2003)

Cool blend of gypsy jazz and world music, a trio that includes violin, mandolin (and related string things), and hand percussion. The group is from Portland and will be playing at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco on Jan. 15.
