Jazz flute with lots of Latin textures, although this particular track turns to Afropop for its inspiration. Upbeat stuff with the sheen of mainstream jazz.

* Bonerama -- "Gekko Love" -- Bringing It Home (self-released, 2007)

Fun bar band featuring four trombones. Gets funky and bluesy in its jazz, as you might expect.

* Grupo Caneo -- "Enamorado" -- V/A: Think Global: Salso (World Music Network, 2007)

From a relentlessly upbeat collection of salsa tracks, made for dancing all night long.

* Wayne Gorbea's Salsa Picante -- "Pa' Puerto Rico" -- Introducing Wayne Gorbea's Salsa Picante (World Music Network, 2007)

More salsa, this time from Puerto Rico.

* Gilberto Gil -- "Expresso 2222" -- V/A: Brazilian Playground (Putumayo, 2007)

From a really cute album of kid-friendly "world" music. This one's a fun acoustic-guitar ride with an offbeat riff that I'm really loving. I'll have to dig this one out for my regular show someday.

* Sacambaya -- "Paja Brava" ["Wild Straw"] -- Kollasuyumanta Pacha [From the Heart of South America] (Arc, 2007)

Like Ren-Faire music with Peruvian flutes. More properly, this is authentic indigenous music from South America, played on the real instruments of the Andes. But this track's got such a flute-and-lute feel, such an uplifting yet swaying/pastoral feel, you can't help but wonder when the jousters are coming out.

Shangoya -- "Swing the Thing" -- Alive at 25 (Mouthpiece, 1997?)

Led by the late Aldric Peter Norton on steel drums and vocals, Shangoya was a taste of Africa for the heartland. Norton was from Trinidad and settled in Minneapolis, of all placs, assembling a band of Americans and Africans to do happy party music with strong reggae hints (but with stronger beats than reggae). I would imagine their effect was like an early Konono No. 1.

* [Unknown] -- [Untitled track 3] -- Bougouni Yaalali (Yaala Yaala, 2007)

Homemade music from Mali, consisting of field recordings made in 1999 and 2000. Music from people's homes, village celebrations, etc. So raw it's almost avant-garde, especially with the rattly percussion on this track.

Yaala Yaala is apparently a world music offshoot of Drag City.

* Youssou N'dour -- "Sama Gammu" ["My Rival"] -- Rokku Mi Rokka [Give and Take] (Nonesuch, 2007)

African pop, of course, with a smoothly upbeat sound even on a song titled "My Rival."

* Mau Mau -- "Cannibal" -- Dea (Felmay, 2007)

From Turin, a rock band that meshes a whole mess of styles including Latin music, Brazilian music, hip-hop attitude, loud guitars.

* Happy Apple -- "Very Small Rock" -- Happy Apple Back on Top (Sunnyside, 2007)
