Why the title

Why "Multiplying Strata"?

Because layers are how I think. The etymology of stratum is instructive (from Merriam-Webster online):

"New Latin, from Latin, spread, bed, from neuter of stratus, past participle of sternere to spread out."

Strata also means (in Late Latin) "paved road", because the Romans built roads by building up layers of dirt and rock to raise the roadbed above the surrounding land.

So, roads, beds, layers, imbrication. Irreducible specificity. A sense of history. Jumbles. The great state in which I live. The way I paint.

"Multiplying" because, well, I hope to add layers to my own picture, and others.
