A new Time article on the dynamics of the presidential campaign has this high-assay nugget of political ore:
As the Bush team sorts out its internal mechanics, it will press the advantage of incumbency. Administration sources tell TIME that employees at the Department of Homeland Security have been asked to keep their eyes open for opportunities to pose the President in settings that might highlight the Administration's efforts to make the nation safer. The goal, they are being told, is to provide Bush with one homeland-security photo-op a month.
I hope they stick to this. The public response to the 9/11 exploitation ads has been encouraging -- the Bush campaign has done themselves more harm than good by bringing it up. If they use HSA to build rah-rah photo ops each month, it will give the Kerry campaign one opportunity per month to point out that taxpayer money is being diverted from our daily security to Bush's job security.
