Eric was born in Torrböle village in Västerbotten, Sweden. His
family moved around a lot. There is no note in the parish
record that shows when Eric left home. He hasnt been found in
any records of moves in and out of the parish either. No
obvious reason why he started to call himself Holmlund has been
found. From his family bible it is noted that he says he is
from Holmfors Bruk, Nordmaling parish, Vasterbotten, Sweden. A
Bruk is a sawmill where young unmarried men stay and work.
He arrived in USA on July 4,1868 along with the John F.
Backstrom family. They made a loan to Erick which enabled him
to come to the USA with them. They lived for a while in
Jamestown, New York. In December 1869 they moved to Kansas
City, Mo. After being married they moved to Bucklin, Mo. in
1872. Erick's original name was Erickson which was changed to
Holmlund when he came to America. He had a half-brother in
Sweden which Elin Holmlund visited after Erick died. He showed
her the northern lights. His last name was probably Johanson.
Comments: In those days you could pick almost any surname you
liked. as long as it did not belong to a noble family. In many
cases people choose the same surname as someone they liked or a
name that was connected to their birthplace, etc. The name
Holmlund is quite common in the Nordmaling area. Its possible
that if all of Erics siblings were followed ahead in time that
they also called themselves Holmlund. The fact that he hasnt
been found in the records of moves is not unique. Although the
law said that all parishoners had to get an attest from the
church before they left their parish , many did not bother to
get it, so in many cases it could be years before the priest
knew they left. The emigration records werent kept until 1869
so he cant be found there either.
