Costa
Rica is a fantastic place to observe wildlife
close-up. We rented a car and immediately set off
for the jungle on backroads. Our first stop was at
the little town of Heredia. El Fortín, built in
1824, is a picturesque brick structure with a bust
of the Supreme Commander in front. A slight
problem with the construction - the gun slits are
tapered in the wrong direction! Heredia is only a
few miles out of San Jose, the congested capital
city, at the point where the road climbs the
mountains surrounding the central
valley.
