1982 A disastrous accident occurred Fall River Railroad Tuesday eve. By breaking of a wheel of one
of the cars, a train was suddenly brought to a stop. Although immediate measures were taken to
prevent the approach of another train which was expected in the rear, a dense fog prevented the
signals being seen and a colision consequently ensued. Several persons were severely hurt. We
regret to learn that Mr. BABCOCK of St. Andrews (Charlotte Co.) was so much injured, from
inhaling the steam, that he expired on the following Thursday.

3290 d. F.A. BABCOCK, Esq., merchant of this Town St. Andrews Monday 21st at Stoughton near
Boston. The Monday eve. train from Boston for New York via Fall River stopped at Stoughton to
examine the wheel of one of the baggage cars, which was found unsafe. While repairs were being
made Mr. CLAFLIN, the Conductor, kept on watch the special Bridgewater train, but the night
being very foggy and dark, the train did not observe his signals until within a few rods of the
disabled train when the engines were reversed. The engine struck the rear car with such force as
to smash through one half of it severely scalding and injuring five passengers. Other cars were
thrown from the track in succession. The report (in Boston newspaper) states Mr. BABCOCK was
bruised, but not badly hurt - but it appears that he was fatally bruised, as he lingered until
Thursday morn. when his spirit winged its flight to Him who gave it.

2007 Mrs. Cecelia BAIZLEY died at Westcock (West. Co.) 25th inst., having arrived at the age of 104
years. She was a daughter of a soldier in the 102nd Regt. stationed at Fort Cumberland. Her
father's name was William SPEEDE and her mother's, Peggy McDONALD. She was apprenticed
by her parents to the late Tolar THOMPSON, then lately arrived from Ireland and settled at
Tantramar. A near neighbor was Mr. FAWCETT and with him lived a lad named FITZGERALD. The
naturally became acquainted and were married. The service was performed by Mr. Burnham, J.P.
and the wedding took place at Tolar Thompson's. Among those present were Benjamin READ and
his wife, Alex. KINNEAR and his wife and two young men named BABCOCK and the affair wound
up with a supper and dance. The young people settled at Wood Point on what is now known as
the Wm OUTHOUSE place. Roads scarcely existed in those days and the most convenient way
to get from Wood Point to Tantramar was by boat or canoe. Fitzgerald started one morn. to go
to Tantramar to get seed potatoes by boat. His boat was anchored off the shore and her started
to swim for it. He never reached it. The water was cold, the tide strong and he was swept away.
When he was missed his wife and mother went along the beach to search for him. They were
attracted by the barking of a dog to drift wood and found his body. He was only 22 years of age.
The only inhabitant of Wood Point at this time were Joseph ATKINSON, Oliver BARNES, Pickering
SNOWDON and James WARD. Soon after Mrs. Fitzgerald went to Dorchester to live at the hotel
then kept by Mr. KINNEAR. There was only a trail between Westcock and Dorchester. Edwin
COLE took her through on horseback behind him. Her wages were a dollar a month. After living
there a couple of years, she was married a second time. He second husband was Stephen
BAIZLEY. The knot was tied by the late Judge Keillor. Within two years Mrs. Bailzley has been able
to walk long distances and her memory even up to a recent period was very tenacious of past
events. The above particulars of her life were some months ago furnished by herself. (cross
reference: BEAZLEY).

768 The history of crime in Westmorland is marked by two previous executions and both criminals
hailed from Sackville. In 1807, Henry BABCOCK, acting under an impulse caused by religious
fanatacism, killed his sister-in-law at Shediac. He got the idea from hearing some revivalists who
were at work in the county at the time, that only by the means of scrifice could the atonement of
sins be made and he went to Shediac and murdered his sister-in-law and made attempt on the
lives of other members of the family. The next execution took place Sept. 8, 1864 when Amos
HICKS was hanged for the murder of an old British soldier named HILL, whom he deliberately
shot in the woods a short distance on the Dorchster side of the line between this and Dorchster
parishes. Hicks, who was only half witted, swore that he acted under the suggestion of an uncle
named TINGLEY, who was afterwards tried as an accomplice and acquitted. The story is that Hill
squatted on a piece of land which Tingley claimed as his and refused to move off. Hicks was
frequently told by Tingley that it would be better if Hill were out of the way. One day Hicks took
his gun, apparently with the intention of going partridge hunting, and went to where Hill was at
work in the woods with his son, took deliberate aim at the man, shot him and ran. He was
arrested in town here shortly after. His execution was public and it is said Dorchester never had
so large a crowd within its boundary as on that day. He was hanged by Sheriff Botsford in front
of the Court House in full view of the people. (see original for execution of `Buck' for murder of
Policeman Joseph STEADMAN)
