395   Perhaps one of the most appalling disasters which the storm of Monday night brought about is

the loss of the new barque "Genii", 500 ton Register at New River. This vessel was built at St.

Andrews by Messrs. Glen & Co. for Capt. Duncan ROBERTSON, Robert ROBERTSON, Esq.,

Canterbury and E.R. BURPEE, Esq. and launched some three weeks since. She sailed in ballast

from St. Andrews on Friday last and arrived at New River on Saturday morn. to load deals for

Liverpool under charter of J.E. KNIGHT, Esq., lessee of the mills of Messrs. Prescott & Lawrence

at that place. There were some 60,000 feet of deals rafted and ready to be put on board on

Monday. The raft being completed, it was placed under the lee of the breakwater which, it was

thought, would offer it ample security from the effects of the coming storm. The pilot of the ship,

Capt. James CLARKE of St. Andrews, had been put ashore and it was intended that he should

be taken on board ship again toward night. The Stevedores, George and Peter McVICKER had

come from Mascarene bringing their crew, six in number, with them, and thus all, except the Pilot

were on board when night came on. The following are the names of the men who were lost:

Charles BAYLEY of Westport, Brier Island, Capt.; John M. STRATON of Fredericton, Mate; James

McGILL, St. Andrews, 2nd Mate; John WILSON, Portugese, Steward. The names of the

Stevedores, all of whom belonged to Mascarene (Charlotte Co.) were Peter McVICKER, George

McVICKER, Eben GREEN, Harvey McNICHOL, Daniel HOYT, John ROIX and George

HENDERSON. The first mate, Mr. STRATON was the s/o F.A.H. STRATON, Esq. of Fredericton

and the second mate was the s/o late Capt. McGILL of St. Andrews. Capt. BAYLEY leaves a wife

and family resident in Westport, Brier Island. (see original) (see also BAILEY, McVICAR, ROUX)

      7 October 1869 M.T. (also known as D.T.)

1870  The remains of Mr. STRATTON, lost during the late gale while on board his ship, the "Genii"

reached Fredericton last eve. and will be interred tomorrow with masonic and military honors at

4 1/2 o'clock. Funeral from his father's residence Brunswick St.

2092  `Star Herald', death at Presque Isle, Maine - Mrs. BULL was the eldest of three sisters and one

brother. Her parents came from Nova Scotia when young people and settled inb Majorfield

(Moorefield) N.B. where she was born. She was married in Chatham, Miramichi (North. Co.) when

19 years old, making one in a triple wedding, her two sisters being married at the same time. She

came to Aroostock, Maine about 68 years ago, and at that time her husband's was the only

clearing above the Aroostock bridge at Presque Isle. When tired of riding in the boat (for the river

was the only highway then) she would take her baby in her arms and walk along the rough shore.

For three months she did not hear a woman's voice, then a squaw came down the river, singing

as she paddled her canoe and Mrs. Bull said that song was the sweetest music she ever heard.

She was a woman of rare forethought and energy. At one time when her husband was away in

the logging camp, a heavy snow storm came on. The most of the hay was in the barn on the

island, while a stronger structure stood upon the mainland. With the aid of two small boys and

a yoke of oxen, she moved the hay and as she came up the bank with the last load, the barn on

the island fell in with the weight of the snow. At the time she came to Aroostock all the trading had

to be done at Woodstock, N.B. There were no stores, no mills, no post office nearer. Once she

had a very narrow escape in the Rips below Aroostock Falls, when going to Woodstock with wool

to card, and grain to grind, in company with a neighbor. She had a small babe with her, which

as it was near night, it was wrapped in a heavy cloak and that alone saved its life when the boat

upset, for it kept the child from sinking. Mrs. Bull was wedged between the boat and the rocks

in such a way that the waves kept dashing over her, while the force of the current rushed the boat

against her so hard that it required the strength of three men to hold it back so that she could be

pulled out. She was unconsious but mother love came with consciousness and her first words

were `Where is my baby?' That baby was Mrs. Wilden STRATON, now living in Presque Isle, and

it happened 64 years ago in June. She reached Woodstock safely but she lost everything in the

boat and her baby was black and blue for days.

351   Fredsericton papers report the death of Timothy O'CONNOR, who departed this life Tuesday eve.,

age 81. Deceased was a native of Ireland and came to this province with his father, Michael

O'CONNOR well known in his day as Deputy Surveyor, and entering the Crown Land office saw

sixty years of continuous service. Having compiled most of the official plans from the original

surveys, his knowledge of the lines, grants, timber, mining and fishery licences over the whole

province was comprehensive and during the last 25 years of his official life, the leading lumber

operators can testify to the accuracy of his knowledge. In May 1889 he followed to the grave his

beloved wife after a married life of 58 years. Of nine children of their union six survive, viz: Rev.

Arthue O'CONNOR, rector of Prestigo, Wisconsin; Mary J. O'CONNOR, one of the grey nuns at

      Quebec, Timothy G. O'CONNOR, merchant, Fredericton; Charles A. O'CONNOR, counsellor-at-

2240  A serious accident occurred in James STRATON's residence on Hazen Street last night by which

a young domestic named Lottie DOHERTY was almost burned to death. The girl who is about 18

years of age had been reading (before) going to bed and had fallen asleep before extinguishing

the lamp. Shortly after 11 o'clock she rushed into the hall way with her night dress all in a flame

and screaming for help. Mr. Straton, who happened to be up in the house reading rushed to her

assistance and succeeded in smothering the flames by throwing a rug around her. He then ran

into the bedroom and after a quick fight, beat out the fire that was consuming the carpet and

other things in the room. As far as cane be learned the girl upset the burning lamp in some way

when she woke up after taking a nap and the flames had caught onto her night dress. She was

badly burned about the limbs and body, the most serious burns being on the hips and breast.

She was taken to the general public hospital this morn. and it is thought there that her recovery

is dountful. Lottie Doherty is said to belong to Albert Co.

3209  The petition of Abraham E. KUPKEY was presented by James STRATON in the matter of Claude

CAMERON, an infant under 21 years of age. The petitioner asked for an order to compel the

guardian of the infant, Mrs. Elizabeth CAMERON to execute a deed of some property, situate in

the village of Andover (Victoria Co.) From the petition it appeared that the guardian was appointed

in 1883, and an order for the sale of the land made by Judge Weldon as judge in equity. But in

this order the property was erroneously described as being bounded by the highway, whereas

in fact it was bounded by the St. John river. (see original)
