Create Image from Rendered Viewport:

Example:
Here is a picture of an elevation sheet with rendered viewports of the building model. The sheet is 36in x 24in and the layer is set to 300 dpi. It takes more than 10 minutes to render these elevations on my laptop ... much too long to be frequently updating.

1.
The solution is to create a 300dpi image (jpeg) of the rendered viewports and put those on the Final Elevations sheet. It avoids dealing with viewports that have dropped images and need large delays to render. When you have the time ... you render the viewports and use the process below to create an image of them. Then update the image on the plan sheet.

Print Window PDF Services:
Previously I used "Export Image" from VW to produce images, but it is a complicated process to produce a high dpi image at the right size. It involved "Marque" and adjusting dpi settings. Cumbersome but It worked.

Then recently, inspecting the PDF Services of the Print Window, I noticed "Save PDF to iPhoto". Clearly a workflow to capture a page as an image.

2.
The PDF "workflow" files can be in two locations. The main one is the top level "Library/PDF Services" folder of the operating system disk.

3.
Double clicking "Save PDF to iPhoto" opens the automator workflow. And it shows what step the workflow uses to create an image from the page. "Render PDF Pages as Images".
I created my own workflow action in Automater. Note you can set the Image Format, Resolution and Compression.

4.

You can also see I've added an additional step: Open the image in Preview. There are enough image editing tools in Preview to do many adjustments (crop, lighten, darken, sharpen, etc.) and you can then save the image to a chosen location.
The workflow is saved into the PDF Services folder ... or saved to another location and use the "Edit Menu" in the Print Window PDF Services to add the workflow action to the list of services. You can see in the Print window (in the first image above) that I saved my workflow as "Open JPG 300dpi in Preview".

Its necessary to save the image file to a location so you can import the file back into VW from the VW "File: Import: Import Image File..." menu item.

5.

Below is the image imported back into VW on same page as the viewports. You can see the image is 36in x 24in jpeg at 300 dpi.
6.
NOTE:
1. You must set the Sheet Layer dpi at 300 or higher if you want to get a true 300dpi image from it.
2. You can create a custom sheet size in Page Setup to contol the final image size. Below I've created a 22x34 Custom Page Size to set the final imported image size to 34x22.

7.

Here is a copy of "Open JPG 300dpi in Preview" workflow I have installed in my PDF Services.
You can import it into your PDF services by selecting "Edit Menu" in "PDF" Print window menu shown in Image 2. above.
And selecting the unzipped file below.
Open JPG 300dpi in PreView.zip
