Printing a VW Document has always been a fairly complicated issue. Printers, Plotters, Print Bureaus, PDFs, Pages Sizes and Process. I assume everyone has to adjust their procedures depending on opertating system, equipment and final product.

My Current Process:

Print check sets on HP Laserjet at 11x17.
Create PDFs for intermediate and final sets that are usually emailed to Clients, Engineers and Print Services.
My experience is that clients usually have Adobe Reader and are able to view or print the plans on at least letter size paper.
The HP Laserjet 5000 also will print 12 x 18 from manual feed tray. This is conveniently 50% of the more common 24x36 sheet size used in my area. The reduced size is convenient on site ... so I aim to make the plan readible at this scale.

Tools:

VWPrintPDF Install Description and Download:
2008-06-29: Leopard compatible version. Uses PDF tools supplied with Mac OS X 10.5
My Main printing tool is a combination of applescript, vectorscript & automator scripts. Consequently it only works on a Mac.
It will batch print or PDF a set of pages.

Tips:

Create Image from Rendered Viewport:
I've used Rendered ViewPorts for elevations and some 3d views on plan sheets. The problem with rendered viewports is that they can take quite a while to render at 300 dpi and they drop their image (requiring an "Update") way too often. Here is a fairly simple technique, on a mac, to create and use an image of a viewport on a plan sheet, instead of the viewport itself.
