WALKING G RANCH CAMP NEWSLETTER March 2006 Where has the time gone? January and now February have passed by one exciting day after another here at the Walking G. We often find ourselves losing hours out of the day getting caught up talking about all the wonderful memories we have from last summer and how excited we are for this summer to come. There has been so much going on and so much going to happen in these past and future months here at the Walking G Ranch. This newsletter should help keep you up to date on all of the excitement! New Foals for 2006 On February 2nd 2006 at 12:20am, Walking G Ranch received its first new foal of the year. Road Action "Tacky" foaled a strong and spunky chestnut colt whom we call "Zinc". Dash Away Honor "Dash" was supposed to foal on February 16th but she is enjoying her stay in her big and comfy foaling stall so much that she just won't foal yet. Any minute! All the rest of our mares, Pleasing, Awalzer, Septembrist, and the newst mare, Coy Pirate are all expected to foal in April. It will be a very exciting, busy time for both us and the horses! From Wild Campers to Wild Animals If you think the wildness goes away when camp ends here at the Walking G your are very wrong. Just as we were finishing up closing the camp facilities down for the winter a flock of wild canadian geese and ducks flew in. They wait each morning by the pond for their grain. Do you think we should tell them that they'll have to share with the goats this summer?! Next month we will start repairing fences in the lower pasture because we are planning to have around 200 goats this summer. We will need your help to run them to and from their pen to the pasture each day! Awesome Activities We have been very busy on the ranch planning to start many new improvements with the ranch house, bunk houses, and equipment. April will be the start of preparing for the summer. Many of the activities will be made even better with the improvements. We will be getting a new rifle with a scope to make your aim even better than it already is! New targets and archery equipment will be arriving any day! We are also having adventures finding new bike and riding trails to explore this summer (including a trail to the top of flag mountain for morning hikes!) Herc and Cappy (our two boats) are going in to be re-upholstered for even more fun trips to the lake with our Bonsai tube! Our out of control campers in the parade last year went over really well. But this year is our 50th anniversary of camp, so we will have to put our heads together to come up with the best theme for the parade. We're sure it will be even better than any year before it! Counselor Corner This upcoming summer we will be introducing a few new counselors to our program. We are proud to have Sara Schoenhals as the mares and foals counselor this summer. She was a camper for many years and knows how much fun Walking G is. Dave will also be attending the U.C. Davis Employment Fair on March 8th to interview more people looking to work in recreation. He will be interviewing positions for a new cook and another boys counselor. We're anxious to see the new faces in the Walking G program! Where Are They Now? As for last summer's counselors... Annie McKinley is attending Pepperdine University in Southern California. Sarah Robinson is working as a veterinary assistant and is attending college in Arizona. Kat Powelson and Kathleen O'Leary will both be back this summer to bring us even more fun! Gracie Cadenhead and David Pace are both attending Greenville High School. Just the other evening they spent a few hours with us laughing and sharing memories of last summer. Molly Baker is living and working here at the Walking G and is counting down the days until camp starts again this summer! WALKING G RANCH CAMP NEWSLETTER December 2005 The mornings are bright and cold, the ice is inches thick on the spring ponds and water troughs! The horses, cows, goats, rabbits, and barn cats all have their thick winter coats. We had just a few days of stormy weather and the (since we don't get fog here) day after day of sunshine! Molly Baker was able to return this September. Molly was our head riding instructor this past summer. She has been training our yearling horses and is attending Feather River College near Quincy. Speaking of excitement, the camp enrollment for 2006 is gaining momentum. Every application for our 50th season brings summer closer in our minds. We will be celebrating this special occasion every session! 2005 has been a very good year for the Walking G! We are anxiously looking forward to having many of our olds friends here again as well as making many new friends in 2006! Happy New Year! P.S. Much more news coming in our January 2006 Newsletter! We will start our session enrollment countdown! WALKING G RANCH CAMP NEWSLETTER November 2005 Time does not exist here on the Walking G. The happy hours, days, weeks, months, and years all blend together and fly away before our eyes! We have had many foreign counselors here on the Walking G during the past 49 camp seasons. They all had the same reaction when their time here was done: A big teary eyed hug for all of us and in broken English (except for the Australians New Zealanders and English and then it was accents) they said, "I can't believe it is already time for me to leave. The Walking G is a magic place!" The above is my explanation (excuse) for not writing since last April Fools Day! Now dont get the impression that I am a modern day Rip Van Winkle, up here in the mountains dozing under a big oak tree! Weve been keeping very busy here around the ranch! Last spring was filled with new foals, baby goats, and taking mares along with their new foals to and from breeding farms all over the country! (Pleasing with her colt Summitt and Sookloozy traveled to Kentucky.) Not to mention that the anticipation for the 2005 camp season kept us pretty busy with preparations! Our 49th camp season (Summer 2005) was a great one! We had terrific kids, wonderful parents, and a summer full of happy memorable experiences! We are working on getting summer 2005 photos on our camp photo page for everyone to see. After camp was a very busy time of cleaning, storing, and winterizing everything connected with the camp. The middle of September found me traveling to Kentucky to the Keeneland Yearling Sale with "Sookie's" (Sookloozy) yearling colt "Red" (Unbridled Slew). He and I both enjoyed the trip and arrived at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington Kentucky in good shape. "Red" went to the sale with the Darby Dan consignment. There were 5,110 select yearlings that entered in the sale. We were a little concerned about getting lost in the crowd, but I felt if the right people saw him that he would sell well. Thanks to all you hard working campers who helped to sale condition him! We found a beautiful mare, Coy Pirate, in the Barretts October Sale in Pomona, CA and were able to purchase her for $30,000.00. Yeah! We have her home here now and were looking forward to her foal by the good winner and sire Benchmark in April 2006. After she foals, Coy and baby will go to Kentucky where she will be bred again. We havent decided on the stallion yet, but we will let you know all about him when we do! We are also proud to announce that we are expecting a foal by the champion sire Speightstown out of Pleasing in April 2006 as well! The enrollment applications are coming in for our 50th camp season in 2006! This awakens me to the fact that another fun filled summer will soon be here! If you havent sent your application to us yet, please do as soon as you can. I hate to turn anyone away, but I am determined to hold the enrollment to a maximum of 36 campers each session so that I can have more time to spend with YOU! I am setting my alarm for December. So be sure to check for a new newsletter with updates on December 15th! Til Then: Happy Thanksgiving! Dave NEW FOALS (2005)
