Why do you need a Cartographer?

Cartography is a “cognitive art” - to view a well-designed map is to think about its content rather than simply observe it.  Maps are the language of geography, the visual representation of your data and often your primary tool for reasoning with or sharing that information.

If you have important information that you need to communicate with a map, it’s worth creating a good one. A professional cartographer has the right skill set to transform your data into a proper map.

For an extended discussion on why you might need a cartographer please see Charlie Frye’s article “When is it Too Late to Find a Cartographer” (CP, page 51).

I am a GIS specialist and cartographer with demonstrated experience in map production and analysis. I have a strong cartographic design background and significant experience with GIS to publication work. I have been a digital cartographer for over twelve years and have worked as a GIS professional for the past four years. I have a firm understanding of GIS concepts, functions and limitations.

I have an educational background in geography with with an emphasis in natural science. I completed my GIS certificate in 2008 and am a current GIS masters candidate (completion 2012).

I have practical, hands on experience managing long term GIS to publication projects and clients. I have experience leading Introductory GIS workshops and guiding student use of GIS through one-on-one consultations. I have managed interdepartmental mapping projects for first responders and written technical documents on GIS mapping techniques.
