Who is Carroll Quigley?
BILL CLINTON, IN HIS ACCEPTANCE SPEECH at the Democratic convention
last summer, mentioned his mentor at Georgetown University, professor Carroll
Quigley. This is significant because the late Carroll Quigley, professor
of sociology and history at Georgetown, was, according to Sara Diamond,
one of the "questionable sources" that Craig Hulet cited in his
material. Sara Diamond, in fact, in the course of her "exposé"
of Craig Hulet, implied that Mr. Carroll Quigley was just another "right
wing conspriacy theorist." Mr. Hulet, however, maintains that Carroll
Quigley's 1350-page tome Tragedy and Hope is taught to the diplomatic corps
at Georgetown University because it shows "the way the real world works."
So far, no one, including Sara Diamond, has been able to either confirm
or deny this. Tragedy and Hope remains a fascinating, if obscure, book.
If Sara is correct, Bill Clinton, too, might be tainted with the germ of
"right-wing conspiracy thinking." On the other hand, Carroll Quigley
might just be a significant historian. MARK EVANS
