TUFF (Together United For Freedom) is a nonprofit organization founded to make the public aware that the state of Texas is holding people in prison under a form of punishment no longer authorized by law. In 1993 Texas repealed most laws that provided prison terms for drugs under one gram and for minor, petty, nonprison offenses. Yet Texas refuses to grant any type of release or time-cut. for persons convicted under the old laws. Texas is the only state in the union that refuses to grant prisoners any release once the law reduces a criminal offense to a minor, petty crime. Call or write today: Gov. George W. I AM A 39-YEAR OLD AFRICAN-AMERICAN writer/artist on death row at San Quentin Prison. The death penalty is just as racist as California's Prop 187 against immigrants, just as racist as the fight to end affirmative action, just as racist as welfare reform. From the time I was arrested until now, I have for the most part dealt with only white people on both sides of the death penalty issue. When I was arrested, I was given a white public defender. I was in front of a white judge. There were two white D.A.s and a damn near all white jury. On my appeal I was given a white appeal attorney, then another, and now maybe two more. I have had only one Black person work on my case-my investigator-and now she is leaving and will be replaced by a white investigator.
Yet when it comes to protesting against the death penalty, I see very few people of color. So white people are killing us, but they are also fighting hard as hell to save us.
African Americans are only 12% of the population, yet we make up almost half of the death row population. I would like to see more brothers and sisters involved. Our lives depend on your help. Please feel free to write to Kevin Cooper, P.O. Box C-65304, San Quentin, CA 94974. I can help you get involved in this fight for life! I am also looking for someone willing to write to me and maybe come visit me.
