: : : My living room looks like this:

: : : ______________________________________________________
: : : I
: : : I Tiled hallway
: : : I _____________
: : : I Living Room I
: : : I Dining I
: : : I Area I
: : : I I
: : : I I
: : : I_________ ____balcony door__I
: : : I Alcove I
: : : I I
: : : I : : : : : : I I
: : : I___window___I

: : : I have three questions. The first question is which way should I lay the planks? The second question is I know there is a 1/4" expansion gap required at all walls, but where the tile starts at the hallway the tile is even with the wall. If I only leave 1/4" gap how will be able to use a transition piece? And lastly how will I be able to do the alcove? Is it ok to double cut a plank like this to fit at the corners:
: : : __________
: : : I_____

: : Run the planks which ever way you want to. Some say start along the longest wall.

: : I'm not understanding your question about the tile transition.

: : What's an alcove? We may have different terms to call it. I have never heard of alcove.

: Basically what it means is that my living room is not a perfect square like all the installation instructions seem to think every room is. My living room is shaped like a square with an extra little square connected to the top of it. What should I put in between the tile and the laminate? The tile is even with the laminate in height and even with the wall that the laminate is running down. Is the 1/4" expansion gap left at the wall enough room to add a transition piece where the tile is?

I don't understand what the wall expansion gap has to do with the area where the tile meets the laminate and you also left an expansion gap, where the transition trim molding is going. If there is a gap, trim it! LOL!
