Your trimminig the expansion gap at the baseboards, right? Well run the ¼ round trim all the way to the corner edge and cut it squared off then 45º, up ½ way down the end cut as a decorative cut. Now run the transition right out to the edge of the decorative cut on the ends of the ¼ round.
