I recommended the cement backer board (wonderboard) to a DIY'er awhile back, and it worked like a charm! And, it fit into his budget and expertise. The job required two layers, the seams of which were staggered.
He was even able to correct for some minor low spots in the substrate by placing foam in some of the low spots and Ardex Feather Finish in others before laying the cement backer board.
