Yes, the age of the flooring does matter, and your suggestion of finding concealed material to use for repairs is a good one.
I don't know what your experience is with restorations, but I assume you have as much hands-on as I do. I find that restoring 3/4" solid hardwood alot easier and more successful than trying to restore engineered prefinished. There are, and have been, so many manufacturers of prefinished and so many widths, thicknesses, species and finishes, that when I encounter a damaged engineered floor, I usually will recommend complete replacement (unless the installation was recent and the manufacturer can be determined). Most homeownwers I've encountered can't remember what manufacturer they chose and, of course, those who buy older homes are at an obvious disadvantage.
