: We are trying to solve a problem with a slab-on-grade kitchen floor that has both vertical and horizontal movement in a 5-year old house. We have gotten several different recommendations on solving the problem from several floor guys.
: The vertical movement in the floor is very small, less than 1/32-inch, and the horizontal movement is less than 1/8-inch. We would like to put ceramic on it.
: Will a subfloor be adequate to install the ceramic over? What kind of subflooring should we use?
: Or should we remove the concrete floor and rebuild it, underpinning it with a new shallow piling?
: Thanks,

Steven,
You could install a membrane and isolate the crack, however, membranes are designed to accommodate horizontal movement. Vertical is a seperate issue a membrane can not address. You would have to be the judge on that. Here are some links that will describe different types of products:

You could also look at www.schluter.com under ditra.
Good Luck,
