Wood Floor Installation

After much thought I have decided to put down a hardwood floor in our family room. The carpet has been removed down to the plywood subfloor. I have shopped our local Menards/HomeDepot and found I like a Red Oak flooring available in packages of 20sq ft.

Now since I've never done this before, where do I start are there any step by step guides from manufacturers or industry associations, to let this do it yourselfer make the first time as perfect as possible.

Any and all suggestions appreciated. Also part of this floor will be next to a high traffic slider so best finishes would be "polyurethane"?
