I was born in 1953, and began taking photographs at a very young age, thanks to my father's love of photography and nature. Camping, hiking and nature study were constant activities of my youth.
Using such diverse cameras as an Olympus Pen-FT 35mm half frame, a 2 1/4 inch Hasselblad, and a Stereo Realist, I began to record the nature around me.
This led, naturally, to many trips to the mountains and deserts with camera and natural history guides in hand. Wanting my own equipment, I settled on one of the first models of the Olympus OM-1 with a fine set of Zuiko lenses. See The Photographs for more on the photos.
I avidly studied photography and photographers like Ansel Adams, David Muench, and the "F-64 Club" were highly inspirational to me. Photography and nature were so important to me that it eventually led in 1978 to a B.A. degree in Natural History Photography (a special major combining Botany, Geology and Photography from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California.) During a brief, early, professional career I had a one-person art exhibit, printed hundreds of photos using 35mm Kodachrome slides and the Cibachrome process, selling them at art fairs, and published photos in botanical journals (Fremontia), a booklet on Lassen Volcanic National Park, and the 1980 Sierra Club Engagement Calendar.
I eventually changed professional careers, from botanist/taxonomist, to National Park Ranger Naturalist, to National Park Vegetation Ecologist, and finally to writing natural science oriented computer programs. Still, I remained an avid photographer, amassing a collection of over 10,000 35mm slides, the vast majority of them Kodachrome 25.
The bulk of the catalog I am building for a new professional career marketing photographs is from that library, plus thousands more 35mm color positive photos I have taken since 1990. This second, upcoming catalog will be many photos taken at night and in caves, as well as many more portraits of people in nature.
I offer this selection on my web site for your enjoyment and perhaps business. If you are interested in nature photography, wilderness scenes, and botanical species and vegetation habitat, I'm sure I can be of service. Thank you for visiting, and please feel free to contact me at DwainG@sonic.net .
