Territoriality is often defined as animals protecting a given area from members of the same species. The advantages of territoriality are many and include being familiar with places to escape from predators, sources of food and freedom of interference during mating by members of the same species. Sometimes, there are territorial fighting that is fierce especially among predator species (lions, wolves, dogs, lizards and snakes). Other species may usually bluff fighting, rarely damaging one another. Some fight in a ritualistic manner with the victor gaining a harem of females while the defeated male leaves the territory of the victor.
Humans also show territoriality. Nationalism is strong in most countries of the world, and all too frequently go to war to protect their territorial boundries. As the centuries passed, weapoing grew ever increasing in deadly power until now we can destroy whole cities with a single nuclear bomb. As the world population relentlessly increases, widespread hunger and economic opression causes fanatical attempts by the have-nots to gain access to the wealth of the richer nations. We have gone through two tragic world wars and now fanatical terrorism threatens to deliver nuclear death or other weapons of mass distruction to the richer nations. With nuclear proliferation, the world becomes ever more dangerous year by year. It appears to be inevitable that sometime soon, someone will detonate a nuclear bombs in such cities as new York, London, Moscow, Los Angeles or San Francisco.
