Types of Studies 1 2 | Methods and Tools

Front-end Evaluation provides exhibit planners with valuable insight about target audience expectations and understanding of proposed content and reactions to proposed stories. Front-end evaluations typically use interviews, surveys, questionnaires and/or focus groups.

Formative Evaluation ensures that your exhibit and exhibit elements are as effective as possible before final printing and installation are completed and paid for. Formative evaluation usually involves testing exhibit element mock-ups or prototypes with visitors.

Summative Evaluation assesses exhibit and program impacts on visitors and users. What do people take away from the experience? Summative and Remedial evaluation can look at how effectively the exhibit/program is communicating to visitors. It can identify successful elements as well as those that need improvement. Summative evaluations can include surveys, follow-up studies, observation, and tracking and timing studies.

Remedial Evaluation of exhibits is often associated with summative evaluation. They share many of the same tools. Remedial evaluation, as the name implies, aims to identify areas where the exhibit or program can improve on meeting its visitor impact goals.

"Through Wendy’s work, we gained important insights into program strengths and needs, providing a meaningful basis for planning the coming two years. Until Wendy summarized her methodology and findings for the staff, I don’t think most of us realized how much program assessment can help us avoid ‘spinning our wheels’. Wendy is competent, creative, and flexible -- a joy to work with."

Projects Coordinator and Darkened Waters Curator,
