The town and Principality of Orange lies in the Rhône valley about fifty miles north of the Mediterranean coast. The ruler was Raymond V de Baux.
The Province of Lyonnais, centered on the town of Lyon in the Rhône valley which is 150 miles north of the Mediterranean coast, was reunited with the royal domains in 1312.
The Countship of Forez lies in the Loire valley to the east of the province of Lyonnais, its principle city being Roanne. The title-holder was either Count Guy VII de Forez who died sometime in 1358, or his son Louis de Forez.
The Dauphiné of Viennois is found between the east bank of the Rhône and Italy, and south of Lyons and north of Orange. It was sold in 1349 to Charles de Valois (later king Charles V) who bestowed it to his son upon succeeding to the throne. From that time forward it was given to the heir to the throne and is why the French heir has come to be known as the Daupin. (In some cases he is referred to as the royal Daupin to distinguish him the the Daupin of Auvergne.)
