In the Summer of 2000, I joined the Network Communities group at Sun Labs as an intern working on the Awarenex project. The Awarenex system aids communication between distributed and/or highly mobile workers by integrating multiple modes of communication (voice, email, instant messaging, etc) with presence information. 

The Awarenex client application uses simple heuristics to present a summary of the current location and activity of its users. With that information, users can choose the most appropriate mode of communication for their situation. The client application runs on desktop workstations and mobile devices. I helped to define the project as well as design and implement the Awarenex client application for the Palm and RIM Blackberry wireless PDAs.
