THE LIBRARIAN'S CHOICES
I  will be giving suggestions for good books to read.

Pirates.  If you like the movie, Pirates of the Caribbeans, you will also enjoy Pirates by Celia Rees.  This is the story of two female pirates.  A great adventure set in the eighteenth century that will keep you turning the pages, matey.

The Newbery Award goes to The Tale of Desperaux.  What is the Newbery Award?  It is presented to the best young people's author each year .  It is like the Oscar or Grammy for authors.  Check out this lovely story that reminds you of a fairy tale with its mouse hero.

A Single Shard  This is a new book in the library and it is a winner.  Set in Korea, it tells the story of an orphan who apprentices himself to an elderly potter.  A rich story that will touch your heart.  Winner of the Newbury award for outstanding literature for young people.

The Body of Christopher Creed -  Who is Christopher Creed and what has happened to him?  This mystery around the disappearance of a teenager will keep you engrossed.  It may also open your eyes to how bullying can be so destructive to a person.  For mature readers.

Esperanza Rising -  One of my favorite books.  Meet Esperanza from a wealthy Mexican family who must flee Mexico with her mother to the farmlands of California.  Her world is completely turned upside down, but she is a heroine who will fight to make things work for herself.  An enjoyable read.

Touching Sprit Bear by Ben Mikkelson.   This is truly a fabulous read.  A 15 year old boy is sent to stay on an isolated island after he  has seriously injured another boy.  Can he survive in this primitive world.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers  -  a book that will make you think.  Written as a movie script by the hero, Steve, who is arrested for  participating in a robbery.

In the Forests of the Night  by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes - Written by a 14 year old, the author presents the terrifying tale of a 17 - year - old  girl who is normal during the day, but in the night turns into a vampire.  Also check out her two new books.  Also great.

Tangerine by Edwin Bloor - A most unusual hero who will grab your attention.  Nothing seems to work for the hero at his new school.  He can’t play soccer, his brother is driving him crazy, and the middle school has disappeared into a sinkhole.  A great read!

Holes  Sentenced to a juvenile detention camp, the hero has to dig a five feet hole every day and the next day must dig a new one.  Sounds strange but this book is a delight that teens and adults both love.  Give it a try.

Rats by Paul Zindel.  Not for the faint of heart.  If you like horror movies, you will like this book.  What happens when the rats seek revenge on a town?

Juniper by Monica Furlong.  A medieval tale about a princess who is sent to learn wisdom from an old woman in the forest.  Does she have what it takes to endure  the lessons that she must learn.  Girls have given this a rave review.

Sang Spell by Phyllis Naylor.  A real page turner that I couldn't put down.  When Adam is mugged, he ends up in a community that time has seemingly forgotten.  What is the mystery behind this community and will he ever be able to find his way out?

Aria of the Sea  by Dia Calhoun.  Aria's dream has been to be chosen for the royal ballet school, but when her dream happens will it be destroyed by her jealous rival.  Aria learns to be true to herself and follow her dreams.  A great read.

The Door in the Lake   A boy disappears without a trace down by the lake.  Two years later he suddenly reappears, but he has not aged at all.  What is the mystery behind his disappearance?
