For security reasons, you must an SSH ("Secure Shell") telnet program, that encrypts your terminal session with the server.  Among other things, this protects your password against detection by programs that "wiretap" your connection. If possible, use a program featuring the more-secure SSH2 protocol.

Linux and Other UNIX Varieties including MacOS X

• OpenSSH is already integrated into the base system of major distributions of Linux and BSD UNIX.  At a command prompt, enter:

ssh username@student.santarosa.edu

Windows

• At SRJC, we use SSH Secure Shell from SSH Communications Security, which uses the superior SSH2 protocol.  Please be sure you download the Non-Commercial version!
• PuTTY by Simon Tatham, which also uses SSH2.
• TTSSH, an extension to the non-secure Tera Term telnet program (SSH1 only).
