Bishop Brent's Baguio School: A Book Review by Gerry Geronimo ('71) |
|
I had been searching for this out of print book written by James J. Halsema '36 for over a year. I acquired 2 signed copies (#89 and #94 of a Special Edition of 500) on my visit to Brent School last May, and I finally had a chance to complete reading this book. Bishop Brent's Baguio School (ISBN 971-910940-1-6) is a definitive history of the first 75 years of Brent School and Baguio.
Have you ever wondered (as I have) about who all of the buildings on the Brent School campus are named after? Now I know who Remsen Ogilby, Lyman Ogilby, Harold C. Amos, William Cameron Forbes, and Norman Spencer Binsted (to name a few) were, and the roles they played in the history of the school. |
The book is full of interesting historical facts not only about Brent School, but about Baguio, the Philippines, and the Episcopal Church. I never realized the relationship between Brent School and Easter School, nor Brent School's special relationship with Groton School. This book also has rare photographs and documents. It includes maps of the Baguio region, the city, and the campus. It is a "must read" for those Brentonians interested in the history of their school. The Brent School bookstore still has hardbound copies of this book available. Get your copy now before they run out! |
The hardbound copy costs PHP150. A hardbound copy is around 1.5 - 2 kgs. US airmail rate for 1.5 kgs is PHP572 & for 2 kgs is PHP757. Send a check (payable to Brent School) to the school for $50 and that should cover the cost of the book and shipping cost to the US. The soft-bound copies are all gone. The soft-bound copies were given away to all school employees in last year's celebration of Bishop Brent's day. Thanks to Elouise (headmaster's secretary) for the above information. I was planning on giving away the copy pictured here to a visitor to this site. However, this giveaway will have to wait until I get another copy. The copy pictured here (#89 of 500) was donated to the newly established Brent Alumni Fund for fund raising. It was auctioned off at the recent Asilomar 60s Reunion to Alice Dilli ('64), raising $245 for the fund! |
