Washington, D.C. area alums of the early and mid 1960's recently held TWO reunions in seventeen days. Paul Lyons hosted a potluck October 18th during Leilani Hino's visit to the Nation's Capital. Using a combination of email and snail mail, Paul rounded up Marion Ashford Spurlock, Sally Thomas Ramirez, Norman Mau, Mimi Wolford, Roy Sewall, Gary Miller, Bob Lawrence, Bing Carlson Schroeder, Tony Calhoun, Marcia Mau, Ron Ashford, and Terry Rhodes Lewis. Non-Brent spouses were Blair Lawrence, Frank Moy, and Juanita Ashford who brought son, Tyler. Brent memorabilia included yearbooks and lots of photos. Terry brought a demerit signed by Edna B. Sherriff, Hamilton Housemother. Roy Sewall had us sign his yearbook. On Election Day, November 4th, Mimi Wolford invited visitors Pam Sauerbier Nargie and Joe Nargie to dinner at Good Fortune Restaurant in Wheaton, MD. A quiet dinner in the suburbs turned out to be a surprise episode of This is Your Life for Pam. Brent alums were: Sally Thomas Ramirez, Gary Miller, Bob Lawrence, Marcia Mau, Dick Banks, Paul Lyons, and Norman Mau. Tony Calhoun flew back from a business trip to Charleston, SC to join us. Jakarta neighbors Edward and Lillian Mau hosted Evelyn Thomas and Liz Calhoun at a Brent Parents' table. Parents Dick Wolford and Marion Ashford sent their regrets. Non-Brent spouses were: Blair Lawrence, Frank Moy, Ellen Miller and Debbie Banks and Mimi's guest, Paul Nagao. Gary returned a very small sweatshirt he had borrowed from Pam back in 1962. In order for Gary and Pam to model it for us, it had to be cut in half. Marcia showed a Brent pennant, some certificates signed by Father Griffiths, and photos from her 1972 visit to Brent and 1997 visit to Indonesia. Gary brought a copy of The Merchant of Venice which was issued to him at Brent. Dick had photos of his 1971 visit including the names of the class of '65. One surprise was learning Dabney Sitton was a member of the class. Marcia and Tony graduated with her from eighth grade at the International School in Jakarta. Paul Lyons brought a copy of an email from Gordon Mau informing us of a phone call from Alice Dilli in Switzerland because Gordon's name was in a recent Brent alumni/alumnae newsletter. Thanks to a tip from Alice, Gordon contacted Bob and Ann Lafferty. During the dinner, Bob Lawrence wondered about the whereabouts of Ian Rawson, seventh grade teacher and senior dorm master. The next day, using the Internet Infospace directory, I found an Ian G. Rawson in Pittsburgh, PA. I telephoned and spoke with Mrs. Rawson, who turned out to be Lucy Thiessen, sophomore English and history teacher. Gary Miller followed with a 6 AM wake-up call to Ian Rawson the next morning. Washington, DC alums are planning a future Brent Event during the Rawsons' next visit to DC. Visiting alums or teachers give us a reason to get together more often! |
OBITUARIES Lucy Thiessen Rawson mentioned that Dave Tomlinson had died in Vietnam. I checked the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Directory and found the names of two Brent alums. Warrant Officer David Cullen Tomlinson, class of '62, died July 12, 1968. His name is on panel 52W, line 20. First Lt. Anderson Neely "Skip" Renshaw III, class of '61, died April 13, 1969. His name is on panel 27W, line 71. Gary Miller has made rubbings of both their names. There was a panel for Bill Stilwell, class of '66, in the AIDS Quilt which was displayed in Washington, DC in 1996. The panel was made by his family and included places where he lived: Vietnam, France, and Germany. Bill died in 1988. In the fall of 1964, CBS Evening News did a segment on the Saigon American teen club which included Bill dancing. Jody Ann Widner, class of '65, died in 1984 in Hawaii. Her sister, Jill Elizabeth Widner, recently contacted Gordon Mau thru the Brent Guestbook. Jill's brother Mark also attended Brent. He now lives in Hawaii. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? We've used Infospace, WhoWhere, Four11, and Switchboard on the Internet and PhoneDisc and 88 Million Households software to locate Brent alums and faculty. Despite these efforts, we are still looking for the following: (name/last sighting or last address)
