I arrived at Brent for the first time in January 1964 to complete the second semester of my junior year. Up to this point I had happily attended a small school in Jakarta but my father, sensing the need for a broader high school experience before college, selected Brent. Here's a letter from the headmaster, Rev. Griffiths regarding enrollment followed by a cablegram confirming my acceptance. What follows is a chronicle of pictures and mementos from January to May 1964. These will be of special interest to the Classes of 1964-1967. January 15, 1964 - Color photos of Brent: entrance, chapel, library, Richardson Hall which was still partially under construction, infirmary, dining room & Ogilby Hall, and Hamilton Hall. Upon my arrival, I was given a Student Handbook and a class schedule. Assigned to Hamilton Hall, I met my roommate, Jody Widner. Marcia Mau had been Jody's roommate for the first semester. Sadly, we have recently learned that Jody passed away in 1984. She was a very special person. Demerits: Absence Slip, Absent from Gym, Board of Appeals, Late for Study Hall, and Conduct Report. I believe I may have held the girl's record for the number of demerits that year and spent many hours working them off in the bookstore. It seemed that the boys received fewer demerits than the girls but they also had fewer restrictions. Of course the flip side of this inequity was that the boys had to work their demerits off in the pig pens located in "The Valley". January 19 - Weiser Raid (shaving cream fight): (1), (2 - top to bottom: Jody Widner, Karin Carleson, Wendy), (3), (4 - left to right: Wendy, Karin, Jody), and (5). Around the Campus: (1 - Wendy and Jody), (2 - Wendy and Jody), (3 - Dave, Ric, and Jody), (4 - Jody, Dave, and Jeff Cox), and (5 - Rick Service and Jody). January 25 - Slave Sale: Bill of Sale, "the Gang", Jim Fitchett, Walter Grubbs and Jimmy Hilgendorf, (Walter, Jean, Mac, and Jody, Dave Palmore, and Jody and Mac. One memorable event of the year was The Spanish Club Carnival. Held in the downstairs living room of Hamilton Hall, we had a talent night followed by the presentation of the class kings and queens. "The Beatles": Dave Palmore and (Fred, Tony, Walter, and Bill). Class Kings and Queens Bill and Wendy, (2), and (3). |

Many thanks to Gerry Geronimo for taking on the seemingly impossible task of scanning the contents of my 34 year old scrapbook. All of the pictures were actually pasted in the original album and not removable. Extremely fragile, the scrapbook has traveled around the world several times, been in a fire and barely survived the teething stages of three dogs and several daughters.I hope you all enjoy reliving some great Brent memories! Happy Days! Wendy
