Indians

Wappo Indian Basket

It is estimated that the total number of Indians in California when the Spanish first encountered them was 150,000 to 200,000. California was one of the most densely populated Indian areas in the entire North American continent north of Mexico, with perhaps four times the human density per square mile of any other aboriginal population in what is now the United States.

They spoke 135 dialects of twenty basic linguistic families.
