Volcano Geology

California State Flag
"About 20 million years ago, there began a major period of volcanism that spilled lava over the top of the northern Sierra Nevada and filled valleys of the undulating lowland. Volcanic rocks of the Modoc Plateau were formed at that time. Most of that volcanic material has since eroded away from the Sierra Nevada, but a few peaks north of Yosemite, such as Mount Rose, Squaw Peak, Sonora Peak, and Dardanelles Cone, are remnants of that period.

Recent volcanism of the Sierra occured along the eastern flank, where lava flows and cinder cones dot the landscape."

A Natural History of California by Allan A. Schoenherr

This gives the California wanderer some wonderful geological places to visit, such as: Lassen Volcanic National Park and Mount Shasta in northern California; Devil's Postpile National Monument in Mono County; Coso Hot Springs in Inyo County. Also note that the great depth of Lake Tahoe is caused by a lava dam at its north end and the Sutter Buttes that float like islands in the calm sea of the Sacramento Valley are volcanic outcroppings.

Valdez, Luis (1940 - )

"Luis Valdez was born in Delano, California, to migrant farmworker parents. In 1964 he graduated from San Jose State College, and the next year he was back in Delano, founding his now famous Teatro Campesino as a dramatic voice of the farmworkers movement. In 1969 the group moved to its permanent establishment in San Juan Bautista. As writer and director, Valdez has created an extraordinary body of work, blending bilingual dialogue, commedia-del-arte techniques, Mayan/Aztec imagery, and a keen awareness of social realities, to explore Chicano experience. In the Process El Teatro Campesino has emerged as an international leader in alternative theatre. In 1976 they toured Europe performing his La Carpa de Los Rasquachis as an official American Bicentennial Event. He has also co-edited Aztlan: An anthology of Mexican-American Literature (1972). And in 1978 his play Zoot Suit premiered at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles."

Valdez has also enjoyed success in Hollywood with the movie La Bamba (1988).
