Tunza died on the evening of May 16, 2012, a victim of advanced thyroid cancer. She was 10 years, 9 months, old, which is about 75 in dog years.

Tunza had been totally blind since she was a year old, a victim of a congenital disorder. She had an indomitable spirit, and never let her lack of sight slow her down. “She was extraordinary” said Greg, her seeing-eye-human-being. “She felt that she could do all of the things that dogs with sight could do.” Tunza was bright and not only understood most conversations, but often tried to talk herself. There was some speculation that she had a telepathic link with Greg which often manifested itself by shopping and food suggestions. Tunza was an enthusiastic eater throughout her life.

She is survived by Greg, Miranda, Nick, Grandpa Frank, and by her cousins Buddy Albin, Rosie Albin, and August West Carlson, by her best dog friend Osa Shine, and by all of her human and dog friends from Ragle Park. Special thanks goes to Mary Quinn of All Aboard Animal Rescue who brokered Tunza’s rescue of Greg.
