The Zip Code Rapists and their Tom Jones Fantasies
By Behrend Muller
Now that punk rock has gone mainstream, cheesy ironic rock has become the new rebellion
and the Zip Code Rapists are in the forefront. Their latest album 94124 sounds like
Tom Jones conducting Simon & Garfunkle. "Tom Jones puts on a good show because his
testicles are so big you can see them and it adds weight to his performance."
Although being a band with just a singer and a guitar player can make the ZCR's sound
a bit thin at times, guest musicians make 94124 an ideal record to flip out your
friends out with at three in the morning. From the Funky "Every body shake you're
hide, we're the Zip Code Gentleman,
" to the punk rock anthem "You're all a bunch of queers for Ranch Style Beans!"
No other band captures the extremity of emotions that rack the human psyche while
gluttonously consuming RSB. Former Acid takers beware the song Henderson ,
with warped chanting voices and floating screams will cause a flashback. "She's had
my two sons, though they are bums, they are my Pride and Joy, no joke."
The album nears its end with the ironic ballad Happy Like Larry
(he taught me how to die). "Don't you wish you could be in the presence of God, eternally?"
He asks in a chipmunk high-falsetto. "We don't have a plan to make ironic references,
it just comes out." Turkington says of Larry
and sloppy covers they've done of songs by the Doors and Chris Isaak.
94124 wraps up with Andy Warhol-esque recording of women gabbing about their hair,
tinfoil and other essentials. Why? "I love 90210, I don't think it causes brain damage
at all. Our new record is a tip of the hat to that show." ZPR and spin-off records
can be ordered from Armarillo Records Box 24433 94124 SF Ca.
