Anthony A. Gandalf Parker gandalf@community.net (707) 446-2002 1214 Balsam Way Vacaville, Ca 95687-7006 Cover: Do you have a website on the Internet? Do you have a forum or a chat? Does it get out of hand, or drags too slow? Do you wish you could afford a full time person to admin it? You can afford me. I have been on Internet for as long as it has been called Internet. I've done every job of admin, customer support, research and evaluation, or NetCop associated with online sites. Work History: Retired honorably with commendations at age 38 as a Staff Sergeant (Technical/Supervisor) for United States Air Force. Over 19 years experience in the field of logistics as an Inventory Management Specialist and Material Distribution. Trained in all facets of Supply including research, ordering, shipping, receiving and inventory. Specifically including 11 years of progressive experience in the integration of P.C. computers into the work force. Capable of articulating logistics concepts and ideas clearly with an added ability of translating technical information into concise and accurate presentations for audiences of all levels. Accomplished public speaker especially in stressful spontaneous situations. Innovative thinker with the ability to analyze and trouble-shoot complex organizational problems and identify efficient and cost-effective solutions. Able to develop written guidelines and references, and train personnel in use of standardized procedures. I became a Supply Clerk for U.S. Air Force in 1974. I worked in the Computer Peripheral section for 8 years doing keypunch, decoallating, and data entry. At that time desktop computers came into use and I became a MicroComputer Instructor for a squadron of over 700 people. I rotated between my Inventory Management specialty and MicroComputer function until I retired from the Air Force in October of 1993. I continually received new software that I was directed to learn, teach, trouble shoot, and program around. I wrote many applications to better manipulate bulk data from the mainframe computer (downsizing). Most of these were database or automating word processing applications. I helped integrate many different systems. I managed our E-mail and file transfer needs through many phases of downsizing including mainframe, a Bulletin Board System, and a network. The last of this was a SCO UNIX network with 64 lines and 24 modems, over 300 users, CD-Rom access, DOS & mainframe interfacing, nightly data transfers and safety backups. The unix system had to meet strict data security standards which we accomplished using only the UNIX operating system and our own programming. I have taught beginning/advanced classes in a variety of computer systems (DOS, UNIX, MainFrame, Network) and in a variety of software (9 years). Computer Manager for 200+ computers to include minor maintenance and computer security. Computer problem solving where the answers had to be within available software, public domain, or my own programming ability. Solutions often involved an integrated use of different software not specifically designed to be used together in order to avoid costly specialized software. GOALS: I crave to return to a teaching position. Or public speaking to any group. Guest lecturing, doing demonstrations, onstage comedy, even as a "hawker" for charity events (pitching a sale in a carnival-sideshow method). I don't usually go for "salesman" but I can do that very well for something I really believe in. Or online Customer Support if it supports telecommuting. This could be emails, maintaining activity in certain forums or chat rooms. Anywhere that it is desirable to have a human presence to answer questions and maintain order. I also still accept positions of consulting/sysadmin for small startup online businesses. Occasionally for percentage or barter rather than pay. In fact none of these positions need to offer a "paycheck to live on". Nor do they need to offer benefits such as medical since I have that from the military retirement. Any paycheck will be considered. Additional comments: Supply duties included areas such as research and ordering from tech manuals, lateral sourcing from other sites, decision making concerning cost/time considerations of ordering component parts versus entire assemblies, and inventory data basing of issue/retention items. During the course of my military service I was often asked to be flexible and versatile in filling in where needed, often as a secondary job causing dates to overlap. These include 4 years as a Dormitory Manager for 150-200 single adults, 3 years as an augmentee to the Security Police force, 2 years as animal control (mostly wildlife), 5 years as Park Ranger/Game Warden, 2 years managing a Prime Beef emergency-response mobility unit (150 members). In combination with Security Police duties I received weapons training and received 4 separate expert marksmanship ribbons in M-16 rifle, .38 pistol, 9mm pistol, and shotgun (which authorized me to use a tranquilizer rifle). Co-managed many local bulletin board systems. On Board of Directors for Solano County IBM Users Group. Served 3 different terms as President of the same club. I was also their representative to a national users group. Scout Leader, Boy Scouts of America, Environmental Explorer ScoutLeader, Computer Explorer ScoutLeader. Later became Exploring Scouts Commissioner for the area. Ive also done volunteer position with the SPCA. References and documentation are no problem and are available on request. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This portion covers work done in the Computer Services fields. Other addendum are available covering outside work in other fields much of which would be confusing since they are on such varying subjects and overlap with the dates of my Air Force commitment. Presently I am involved with some partial or sporadic paychecks. Mostly doing the "online presence" thing. Managing forums, newsgroups, email boxes, where a fairly immediate response is desired. I am willing to perform the duties of an Assistant System Administrator for as little as $10/hour for the ability to telecommute and flexibility on hours. Possibly even less if the subject interests me. Until I have generated a few more regular paying clients I am no longer able to barter services for percentage in startups. The most recent paying moderating job I have had was with Shrapnel Games. I was the on-staff moderator of the volunteer moderators. The most recent co-admin position I have had was with Survey Research. I installed watchdog scripts to guard against attacks, and I wrote some web-survey to database routines. The most recent ISP I worked for was System Administrator for Community.Net which had over 100,000 users before it closed. I negotiated a continued survival thru another local ISP so that the web-pages and email addresses for those users would still work to allow a comfortable transition to new service providers. After porting all customers to the new ISP I was the last person relieved of duty with a couple of servers in lieu of severance pay. Previously I worked as a subcontractor for customer support and/or system management work on various Internet server systems. I received occassional paychecks and/or services from Digital America, Digital Japan, OnlineTesting.com, Microbrew.com, MailBoss.Com, Wine.Com, Values.com, RXlist.com, Mud.Com, SedCorp.org, GooseMail.com, ISSS.org. My duties involved various computer and internet areas of user support mail, research & development, consultations, public demonstrations, marketing graphics, and design of user interfaces in developing menus. Also security and log maintenance, and scripting new commands for admin use. Ive also worked as asst system admin and filled in as full system admin. Often Ive been paid to "live" in certain support newsgroups and chatrooms for immediate conversational support of users. I have also worked on html web-page designs, online robots for user support, user documentation, inter-system database applications, and installation software. I prefer to play with everything rather than be an expert at anything. This is an advantage on systems already running with many home-made apps in various scripting languages which may need occasional tweaking. My next previous full-time work experience has been as a part-owner of Access InfoSystems; a start-up company which offered Internet Services. I owned %10 of Access InfoSystems of Fairfield, and was the Director of User Services during the time that they were bringing their service online. I managed a TBBS network. I did menu work and user-interface designing on both the TBBS system, and the Sun/Sparc UNIX Internet gateway. This was from October of 1993 to July 1994. At the point in which all of their softwares were installed and their menus fully functional for text, html, and hi-res mosaic environments then my ownership in the company was bought-out. A portion of the purchase-price provided for an Internet Account at no charge for life. Prior to that I was sole owner of Parker's ASK-Key Services. I did house-calls for computer trouble-shooting and home tutoring. From 1990 to 1993. For the period of 1988 to 1990 I did occasional work on graphics presentations and demographics. Many of these jobs were advertised for and received through local bulletin-board systems which I was helping to bring online at that time. Prior to that I did sub-contracting work for Nordic Computers INC of Fairfield. This involved tutoring and graphics designing. Also software testing and the developing of video-graphics for advertising & tutorials. From about 1984 to 1988.
