Frequently Asked Questions

I will be adding to this list as we go along.
Q: I have been using my own account on another server, do I have to use Gracie?
A: Yes, this is now a requirement for the class. It is easier for me to grade and to help students when things go wrong.
Q: I have uploaded all my files to my directory but my pages don't work. Why?
A:

First, check that you are using the right URL. It should be: http://gracie.santarosa.edu/~username There is no www in the address and it should all be in lower case. Second, make sure you did not upload your files to your email folder, rather than the public_html or student folder. For pages other than your index page, look at the URL from the browser, if it says: http://gracie.santarosa.edu/~chaverin/webgraphics/lesson1.html

Look at your directory structure from within your FTP program. Make sure there is a folder called webgraphics inside your directory and an html file called lesson1.html inside of it. Make sure the file name and folder names have the same case. It is good practice to always use lower case letters, then you don't confuse yourself by mixing up upper case with lower case. Another easy mix-up is with dashes - and underscores _. I'm trying to break my dash habit and always go with underscores, which are foolproof on all servers.

Q: My images don't appear on my page. Why?
A:

Right click (PC) or click and hold (Mac) on the broken image from within the browser. Select Open Image in New Window from the contextual menu. From this new window, look at the URL for the image. If it says: http://gracie.santarosa.edu/chaverin/webgraphics/jpeg_images/low.jpg

Look at your directory structure from within your FTP program. Make sure there is a folder called webgraphics inside your directory and a folder inside of the webgraphics one called jpeg_images. Inside that folder, look to make sure that is where low.jpg lives. Again, check for upper and lower case errors.

Q:

Can I make up my own links or make my pet site for just cats?

A: No, please stick to the guidelines. Most of the time your client will be dictating your navigation and other elements. This assignment is meant to give you practice at working within guidelines.
Q: When I attempt to access the Adjustment menu by going to Image Menu > Adjust, Adjust is grayed out and not accessible.
A:

Check in your Layer palette and make sure you are not on a text layer.

Q: I'm trying to add a Layer Mask, but when I go to the Layer Menu, add Layer Mask is grayed out and not accessible.
A:

Make sure that the layer you are trying to add a Layer Mask to is not the background layer. If it is a background layer, double click on it to change it into a normal layer.
