Eric Meyer

"Wax"

(1988-1992)

Inaugural Inductee: June 2000

The greatest moment of Beat fortuity happened on an early Spring Saturday in 1988.  Kevin and I had been wracking our brains trying to retool The Beat to a level of respectability.  We took our frustrations to Lang Field and by happenstance encountered the most talented ballplayer I have ever met.  Eric Meyer was just out that day to play catch with his roommate, Shalom Jerome. Always looking for talent, Kevin and I coaxed them into a scrimmage and the rest is Beat History.

Eric excelled defensively at second base, centerfield and shortstop. With natural instincts, speed and a strong throwing arm, he played every inning with an “on your belly” attitude and made some of the most incredible defensive plays I’ve ever witnessed. Offensively, Eric was a feared, clutch hitter with impressive power. He was constantly in all of the top offensive categories year after year. Above all, he was a leader on the field. Whether captain of the outfield or captain of the infield, he commanded his teammates respect and the results raised The Beat to heights it had never seen.

In recognition for his efforts, I had the honor to present Eric with the 1989 Brass Beat Award.

In my mind, I believe Eric’s greatest contribution was being a great teammate. His presence was large and he inspired both his teammates and coaches as well. His passion for the game was unsurpassed on the bench and perhaps the league. His contribution to the coaching staff of the 1991 Championship team showed me what a wonderful student of the game he had become. He’s always “#1” with me. I’m proud to have had the opportunity to play this game we love so much with you, Eric. Welcome to The Beat Hall of Fame.
