Upcoming 2008 Season Having left my blog for a long period I thought it appropriate that I make a comment as it is time for another ski and snowboarding season in Utah. The season looks as if it will be light for bookings. For those who can afford to go it should be great as long as mother nature provides her usual bounty of light, fluffy snow. There will probably be fewer people on the slopes. As usual we will provide the discounts that others supply for lift tickets and equipment rental as well as negotiating some discounts with our lodging. There is no value to an empty house!
Park City Many years ago I lived in San Francisco and belonged to the San Francisco Rugby Club. We were invited to play in a Rugby tournament in Park City. The person arranging the trip for us mentioned that he had been informed that fly fishing (another hobby of mine) was good in the area. This enticed me to take the trip. I took my fishing rod as well as my rugby clothes. When I got to Park City the gentleman arranging the tournament took me to a stream going through Park City. He told me when to fish and the appropriate fishing fly to use. I could see a lot of fish and was lucky enough to catch a nice trout. My friend paraded me through Park City telling everyone what a nice fish I caught. A couple of years later I was skiing with a friend at Squaw Valley. It was raining so someone suggested going to Park City. They said it was not very far. My friend and I set off for Park City. It was not much further than we were lead to believe. We drove and arrived there in the afternoon of the next day and I started inquiring about the rugby club. I was told where the rugby players hang out. Being rugby players with the customary hospitality of the sport we were hosted by a young couple. He worked on the avalance patrol as well as playing rugby. He had a great photograph of himself with only the top of his face visible as he was making a turn in deep powder. After skiing at Park city the next day various members of the rugby team took us to ski at other resorts such as Alta and Snowbird. Park City has changed a lot since then. It has lost some of its historical charm as a mining town and has become more crowded and expensive with shops to serve rich home owners and tourists. It is still a good place to visit but as I learned from my rugby friends the skiing is better at the Salt Lake resorts.
Older People Skiing I just celebrated my 70th birthday on the 28th of October. A day later I had an inquiry about my 5 bedroom ski home in Utah. The gentleman said there was a 77 year old in his party. I asked if the 77 year old skied. The reply was yes and on my positive comments he also said that his mother still skied at the age of 90 although she would not be going on this particular trip. What an inspiration. There is hope for us after all.
Introduction As this is the start of my blog perhaps a little background on who I am may be helpful. I am originally from Scotland. I received education in Engineering in Scotland and Business in the U.S. I have been an investor in the rental housing market for over thirty five years and have two ski rental vacation houses below Little Cottonwood Canyon which provide access to skiing in Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude. It is my intention to comment from time to time on events that have a bearing on housing, skiing, Utah, vaction property and other things I find interesting. |
