Sewage effluent
has been rebranded as "recycled water" but it contains
many contaminants including pathogens, dangerous drugs, heavy metals
and endocrine disruptors.
What is not widely known, and what is far more dangerous,
is that "recycled water" contains antibiotic reistant
pathogens and DNA that is coded for antibiotic reistance. These
genes contribute to the spread and virulence of superbugs in the
community.
Because of the rebranding, partially-treated
sewage water is now being sprayed all over the public on golf courses,
schoolyards, domestic lawns and
is even being used for agricultural irrigation.
Seventy percent of all the leftover sewer sludge in
the United States is also being spread on farm land, construction
sites and is even being sold as "fertilizer".
Edo McGowan, Ph.D. and
Maureen Reilly discuss the scope of this problem in WATERBORNE.
