North Coast Narrow Gaugers

Introduction

The North Coast Narrow Gaugers is a model railroading group based in Sonoma County, California. Our HOn3 layout is modular and we set it up several times a year. Each member is free to model the area and era that they choose. Our module lengths are multiples of two feet with widths of 24 or 30". Our minimum radius is 22". We have a standard end profile on the module groups that is contoured rather than flat. This helps to minimize the level look common in modular railroading. The mainline is single tracked with enough passing sidings to operate in two directions. We normally setup an oval layout but are planning on adding some new modules with the ability to turn trains. We use a Digitrax Chief DCC system to control our layout. Digital Command Control makes train operation more realistic and enjoyable, especially with our single track mainline.

Module Descriptions

While most modules depict areas in Colorado, we also have representations of New Mexico and California. Our current module groups include(locale - RR prototype - module length listed):

Module Images

Here are some images of some of our modules. The image files are ~75KB each. Here is the mine in Red Mountain. Here's a closer look at the town of Red Mountain. The ore cars are ready to for a trip to the mill. Somehow the NPC PAX train, shown approaching Red Mountain's depot, has made it to Colorado, Las Pulgas is a small New Mexico town. The business district is quaint. You can see the fall stock rush is in full swing. They're still plantin' 'em up on Boot Hill. Here's D&RGW #457 taking on water at Trout Lake. We have recently added some modules depicting narrow gauge in the Redwood Empire of Northern California. Here's North Pacific Coast's #4, Olema, modeled with a FED Spartan as a starting point. The same member has also done NPC #8, Bully Boy, and scratch built an NPC milk car. Wasatch Creek is our latest module,. It contains a  yard and a small engine facility. This module debuted at the 2000 National Train Show. We used turnouts and switch throws from Railway Engineering. These are great looking and operating turnouts.
