The Ideas to Images
Silk Purse DepartmentSometimes the photographs we receive from authors and publishers need a little polishing to make them really sparkle. Here's one example:
Let's start with an original photo taken by author Herb Zettl for Video Basics 2, provided to us on Kodak Photo CD. Obviously, it's suffering from a sickly green tint from the fluorescent lights, but that's not too serious since this image will be black-and-white in the finished book. Still, this shot does need some cleanup before we can use it. JUMP TO STEP 2

About Photo CD
We've had the pleasure of working with Herb Zettl since early 1994, when we started work on the first edition of Video Basics. In those days Herb shot his photos in black-and-white, had them processed and contact prints made so he could select the best shots from the proofsheets, then had them cropped and enlarged to 5" x 7". It was a time-consuming and expensive process. Now he shoots slides, selects his favorites, and gives them to Alpha CD Imaging in Menlo Park. They scan the slides and put them on a CD-ROM in five resolutions, from 192 x 128 (thumbnail) to 3072 x 2048 (usable for color printing). It's great!
