Art Studies in California

16th Annual Japanese Arts Seminar
January 30 – February 6, 2004

Experience ancient Japan without leaving the country.

Study traditional Japanese arts with master teachers at the Asilomar Conference Center, in Pacific Grove, California, a serene and meditative retreat located on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Pacific coastline. At this profound session, students will learn basic techniques and concepts of selected Japanese arts. The practice of these arts, developed and refined over centuries by Zen Buddhist monks, offers an opportunity for greater human understanding as well as release from stress and usual ways of thinking and creating.
An atmosphere of caring, simplicity and clarity, enables you to fully immerse yourself in the practice and appreciation of Japanese arts.

About Asilomar: Meaning "refuge by the sea", Asilomar is nestled along the shoreline of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Pacific Grove, California. Its enchanted combination of forest and dunes creates a dramatic backdrop and tranquil environment for our retreat.

The Four Main Arts

Bokugi Brushwork includes traditional Chinese/Japanese-style calligraphy and contemporary abstract work. You'll practice traditional calligraphy as well as free-style painting with over-size brushes.

Chanoyu Tea Ceremony , the way of tea, is at once simple and complex in its movements. It can be seen as embodying the essence of traditional Japanese aesthetics and philosophy. You'll learn a simple tea ceremony procedure.

Kyogen Comic Theater is a 600 year old art form closely linked to the classic, and tragic, theater of Noh. You'll learn, rehearse and perform a Kyogen play by the end of the seminar.

Shintaido Body Movement literally means "new body way". Your introduction includes the discipline of various martial arts, modern dance and yoga, which emphasize awareness and moving meditation instead of self-defense and competition.

Other Events

Complementing our daily programs, special guest lecturers are featured during evenings. Time will be set aside for other activities such as discussions, lectures, demonstrations, performances, meditation, and exploring the many attractions of the Monterey Bay Peninsula.

Seminar Tuition: $1500 includes registration fee, all classes, lectures, art supplies, lodging and meals. Some scholarships are available, please inquire.
