I was born in San Francisco. My earliest comics were rip-offs of DOCTOR WHO, newspaper strips and science fiction and horror movies. In college while studying Creative Writing, I discovered both anime/manga and American small-press comics. In 1996 I was hired as an editor at VIZ Media, where I edited numerous manga, including the first several issues of the American edition of SHONEN JUMP magazine, and contributed to magazines such as Pulp and Animerica. In my spare time I self-published several comics, including a 5-issue comic adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and later contributed to the animated film adaptation by Guerilla Productions. In 2003 I began my still-running story webcomic The Stiff. In 2006 I left VIZ in order to work on Manga: The Complete Guide, the first encyclopedia of manga published in English.

A full list of all my self-published comics is on this page.
